The NSW Environmental Trust offers a range of grant programs. These programs fund projects that rehabilitate or regenerate the environment, or promote environmental education and sustainability. The Waste Less, Recycle More Organics Infrastructure (Large and Small) Program provides $43 million over four years to fund infrastructure and equipment to reduce food and garden organics waste going to landfill and increase organics processing capacity to meet proposed new recycling targets of 70 per cent by 2021.

The program is aimed at supporting four streams as detailed below;
Stream 1: Food and Garden Organics Processing
•Grants of between $25,000 and $5 million are available to NSW Councils, groups of councils, other local Government controlled organisations and businesses/private industry with waste management and/or organics processing experience. For new and enhanced infrastructure to process food, garden or combined food and garden organics from households and/or businesses. This stream supports organisations processing organics generated by others.

Stream 2: Business Organics Recycling
•Grants of between $25,000 and $500,000 are available to businesses, private industry, local government universities, prisons, TAFE’s, other Government institutions and not for profit organisations (with a legal status). For food waste avoidance, on-site processing or pre-processing of organics at large businesses, government institutions and not-for-profit organisations such as aged care facilities.

Stream 3: Food Donation
•Grants of between $25,000 and $500,000 are only available to not for profit organisations (with a legal status). To fund infrastructure to facilitate the collection and redistribution of edible food waste from businesses to people in need.

Stream 4: Home Composting
•Grants of between $5,000 and $75,000 are available to NSW Councils, regional organisations of councils, other local Government controlled organisations and partnerships with councils. Funds ‘small’ infrastructure like compost bins and worm farms to enhance council organics management and home composting programs.
